JOEL T MAQUILING PhD
Head, GeoDynamics Research Laboratory
Dr. Joel T. Maquiling is head of the GeoDynamics Research (GDR) Laboratory of the Manila Observatory. He concurrently heads the Geophysics Research (Geo-R) Laboratory of the Ateneo de Manila University. He teaches undergraduate level Physics, and graduate level Physics and Atmospheric Science subjects in the Ateneo. He holds a PhD in Geophysics from the University of Padova in Italy, an MSc in Physics from the Ateneo de Manila University, and BSc in Physics from the Philippine Normal University. His research interests include granular matter dynamics, granular matter composites and geopolymers, fracture mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, and disaster science. He mentors and advises both undergraduate and graduate students in research dealing with geohazards and modeling, modeling the behavior of geophysical fluids (including the aerosolization of the SARS-CoV-2), granular matter behavior and dynamics, rheology, theoretical and computational fracture mechanics, seismology, soil physics, and soil stability analysis. He is a member of the UNESCO Active Learning in Optics and Photonics (ALOP) Team awarded the SPIE Educator Award in 2011.
