Manila Observatory at the 4th International Vietnam Conference on Earth and Environmental Sciences (iVCEES-2024)

A special session for CARE for SEA Megacities and CORDEX-SEA was held from 26-28 November 2024, as part of the 4th International Vietnam Conference on Earth and Environmental Sciences (iVCEES-2024) in Quy Nhon, Vietnam. The conference was hosted by Rencontres du Vietnam, International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science Education (ICISE) and University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) with support from the Vietnamese-German University, Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) and WCRP CORDEX.

The special session, which was co-organized by the Manila Observatory, provided a valuable platform for CARE for SEA megacities collaborators and the CORDEX-SEA community to share updates and initial results of their downscaling activities, engage in discussions with stakeholders to share insights and feedback on user needs, and identify opportunities for collaboration.

CARE for SEA project lead and CORDEX-SEA co-chair Dr. Faye Cruz delivered a keynote speech in the plenary session highlighting the achievements and future directions of CORDEX-SEA. MO scientists Dr. Julie Dado and Jennifer Tibay shared the initial findings on regional downscaling in Metro Manila and the Philippines. Dr. Ma. Laurice Jamero—another MO scientist and manager of WCRP Academy Technical Support Unit— introduced the WCRP Academy.

They were joined by Engr. Calvin Carambas of Marikina City Local Government which is our partner stakeholder for the CARE for SEA Megacities project. Engr. Carambas shared Marikina City’s strategies in preparing for extreme events.
